Olive Fairy Softcover Journal Olive Fairy Softcover Journal

Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist and anthropologist.  Lang was greatly passionate about folklore, mythology and religion, and especially fascinated by mystical tales from other cultures. Lang contributed to over 200 written works, including English translations of Homer's Odyssey.

The images on the Olive journals come from the first edition copies of Andrew Lang's The Violet Fairy Book and The Olive Fairy Book. Published in 1901 by Lang and illustrated by Henry Justice Ford.  Lang's Violet Fairy Book includes stories such as “The Story of the Wonderful Beggars,” “The Lute Player” and “The Princess Who Was Hidden Underground.” The stories were gathered from places like Romania, Japan, Lithuania, Portugal and Russia. Each book in the series was named for the color of its fairy.

Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) a very successful English artist and illustrator, captivated children around the world through his collaborations with not only Lang, but J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan), too. Today, the first editions of Lang's Fairy Books can be found in the British Library's archives.
