J. E. H. MacDonald (Canadian, b. England, 1873–1932)
Algoma Waterfall, 1920

James Edward Hervey MacDonald was born in England and immigrated to Canada, as a boy, with his family. With little formal art training, he began a career in graphic design at age sixteen, eventually working for the leading Toronto design firm, Grip Limited. In 1911, MacDonald became a freelance designer to devote more time to painting. MacDonald, Lawren S. Harris, and a handful of other Canadian artists came to be known as the Group of Seven, likeminded painters who captured Canada’s rugged wilderness in a distinctive style. Among MacDonald’s most accomplished works are landscapes of the wild and scenic Algoma region of Ontario.
